Crosby & Nash 1976 “Whistlin Down the Wire”

coverae6.jpg

(mp3 - 192 Kbps; 49,6 Mb.)

This subset of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young featured David Crosby (born Aug 14, 1941) and Graham Nash (born Feb 2, 1942) relying on their sweet harmonies and strong songwriting. The duo lasted from 1972 to the more-or-less permanent re-forming of Crosby, Stills & Nash in 1977.

Maybe it took more than nine months to come up with another batch of first-rate material, or maybe David Crosby and Graham Nash were saving their first-rate material for the next Crosby, Stills & Nash album, but Whistling Down the Wire, their third and final new studio album as a duo, was a distinctly second-rate effort. As usual, Crosby's loosely arranged jazz-blues tunes were offset by Nash's more pop-oriented songs, but this time around neither of them came up with anything memorable. Crosby seemed most comfortable on his "Dancer," an instrumental, while Nash expressed himself in poetic metaphors that were difficult to follow.

Tracklist:

01 Spotlight - Kortchmar, Nash 2:51
02 Broken Bird - Crosby, Nash 2:44
03 Time After Time - Crosby 2:32
04 Dancer (Instrumental) - Crosby 4:50
05 Mutiny - Nash 4:45
06 J.B.'s Blues - Nash 2:41
07 Marguerita - Nash 4:13
08 Taken at All - Crosby, Nash 3:07
09 Foolish Man - Crosby 4:29
10 Out of the Darkness - Crosby, Doerge, Nash 4:24

Crosby & Nash 2002 “Best Of The ABC Years”

coverre1.jpg

(mp3 – 192 Kbps; 107 Mb.)

"The ABC Years" of David Crosby and Graham Nash were the years 1975 and 1976, when the two, best known for their association with Stephen Stills and, sometimes, Neil Young, were performing as a duo and had left Atlantic Records, which issued the recordings they made with those partners, for ABC, a label later subsumed within MCA, the imprint under which this compilation has been issued. Crosby & Nash released three albums with ABC: 1975's gold-selling, Top Ten Wind on the Water, featuring the chart entry "Carry Me"; 1976's gold-selling Whistling Down the Wire, featuring the chart entry "Out of the Darkness"; and 1977's Live. By the time that last, contractually obligated, album came out, they had rejoined Stills to reform Crosby, Stills & Nash. But this brief, productive period was arguably their most impressive, alone or in tandem, outside the more popular trio/quartet. Fronting a highly regarded and high-priced Los Angeles session band sometimes called the Section (drummer Russ Kunkel, bassist Leland Sklar, guitarist Danny Kortchmar, et al.) and best known for backing James Taylor, Crosby turned out a series of his characteristic jazz-tinged tunes with self-reflective lyrics, while Nash performed pop songs on personal and political topics. Annotator Steve Silberman recalls that such Nash efforts as "Take the Money and Run" and "Mutiny" directed anger at the absent Stills and Young, though the lyrics are too vague and metaphorical for the layman to parse, especially a quarter-century later. But "Wind on the Water" remains a feeling statement on the slaughter of whales. Compiler Mike Ragogna has made a reasonable reduction of the two studio albums, adding four familiar tunes from the live disc, for this 78-minute collection. 1978's The Best of Crosby/Nash, also including Atlantic material, was more complete, but this album lives up to its title.

Tracklist:

01 Carry Me - Crosby 3:34
02 Mama Lion - Nash 3:15
03 Bittersweet - Crosby 2:38
04 Take the Money and Run - Nash 3:24
05 Naked in the Rain - Crosby, Nash 2:26
06 Love Work Out - Nash 4:50
07 Homeward Through the Haze - Crosby 4:05
08 To the Last Whale/Critical Mass/Wind on the Water - Crosby, Nash 5:31
09 Spotlight - Kortchmar, Nash 2:52
10 Broken Bird - Crosby, Nash 2:44
11 Time After Time - Crosby 2:31
12 Mutiny - Nash 4:44
13 Taken at All - Crosby, Nash 3:07
14 Foolish Man - Crosby 4:29
15 Out of the Darkness - Crosby, Doerge, Nash 4:27
16 Immigration Man - Nash 3:25
17 Lee Shore - Crosby 5:17
18 I Used to Be a King - Nash 4:41

Crosby & Nash 1975 “Wind On The Water”

coverzq8.jpg

(mp3 - 192 Kbps; 56 Mb.)

As two of the most distinctive artists from the '60s and '70s given their work in CSNY, Crosby & Nash also did great work as a duo act. Wind on the Water was released in 1975 after the previous year's CSNY reunion tour and the dissolution of their contract at Atlantic. In many respects, this alliance made perfect sense. When it was just the two of them, they were often more likable. Crosby wasn't as much of a blowhard and Nash became more pragmatic. Wind on the Water's virtues are apparent with the first song, the warm and pensive single "Carry Me." "Homeward Through the Haze," "Low Down Payment," and "Naked in the Rain" are gems that all but sum up their complicated harmonic and melodic style. Besides Crosby & Nash being on their game, the studio players here are impeccable. Lovers of '70s pop/rock will love to hear players like Danny Kortchmar and David Lindley effortlessly doing their identifiable riffs. James Taylor, Carole King, and Jackson Browne also showed up for these sessions, but do not intrude or overshadow Crosby & Nash. Without a doubt, despite the strong production, the stars of the show here are Crosby & Nash. The album concludes with "To the Last Whale...: Critical Mass/Wind on the Water." The song is not only a testament to the album's skill at making the complex seem effortless, but it also gets its point across without being mushy. Wind on the Water has an instant classic, lived-in sound and is a definite must-have.
