Christians and Jews in the Ottoman Arab World : The Roots of Sectarianism (Cambridge Studies in Islamic Civilization)

Author(s): Bruce Masters
ISBN: 0521803330
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
Year: 2001

Product Description
Masters explores the history of Christians and Jews in the Arab provinces of the Ottoman empire and how
their identities as non-Muslims evolved over four hundred years. At the start of this period, in the sixteenth
century, social community was circumscribed by religious identity and non-Muslims lived within the
hierarchy established by Muslim law. In the nineteenth century, however, in response to Western influences,
a radical change took place. Conflict erupted between Muslims and Christians in different parts of the
empire in a challenge to that hierarchy. This marked the beginning, as the author illustrates, of the
tensions which have to a large extent inspired the nationalist and religious rhetoric in the empire's
successor states throughout the twentieth century. In this way, Masters negotiates the present through
the past. His book will make a major contribution to an understanding of the political and religious conflicts
of the modern Middle East.

Cigarette Wars : The Triumph of "The Little White Slaver"

ISBN: 0195118510
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
Year: 1999

Product Description
We live in an age when the cigarette industry is under almost constant attack. Few weeks pass without yet
another report on the hazards of smoking, or news of another anti-cigarette lawsuit, or more restrictions
on cigarette sales, advertising, or use. It's somewhat surprising, then, that verylittle attention
has been given to the fact that America has traveled down this road before.Until now, that is. As Cassandra
Tate reports in this fascinating work of historical scholarship, between 1890 and 1930, fifteen states
enacted laws to ban the sale, manufacture, possession, and/or use of cigarettes--and no fewer than twenty-two
other states considered such legislation. Inpresenting the history of America's first conflicts with
Big Tobacco, Tate draws on a wide range of newspapers, magazines, trade publications, rare pamphlets,
and many other manuscripts culled from archives across the country. Her thorough and meticulously researched
volume is also attractivelyillustrated with numerous photographs, posters, and cartoons from this
bygone era.Readers will find in Cigarette Wars an engagingly written and well-told tale of the first
anti-cigarette movement, dating from the Victorian Age to the Great Depression, when cigarettes were
both legally restricted and socially stigmatized in America. Progressive reformers and religiousfundamentalists
came together to curb smoking, but their efforts collapsed during World War I, when millions of soldiers
took up the habit and cigarettes began to be associated with freedom, modernity, and sophistication.
Importantly, Tate also illustrates how supporters of the early anti-cigarettemovement articulated
virtually every issue that is still being debated about smoking today; theirs was not a failure of determination,
she argues in these pages, but of timing.A compelling narrative about several clashing American traditions--old
vs. young, rural vs. urban, and the late nineteenth vs. early twentieth centuries--this work will appeal
to all who are interested in America's love-hate relationship with what Henry Ford once called "the little
whiteslaver."

ten original essays, each of which explores the gulf between history and myth regarding a centralcharacteristic
of the Sixties. Topics covered include civil rights, the student movement and the New Left, the Vietnam
War, the antiwar movement, gay rights, the counterculture, and the women's movement.Long Time Gone

Unlike most other similar books, this systematic, carefully reasoned, non-technical analysis of the
nature and significance of scientific knowledge opens the way to reconciliation in the 'science wars'.
By describing how academic scientists actually undertake research and communicate their findings,
it shows that the philosophy, psychology and sociology of science are inextricably entwined, and that
'realism' and 'relativism' are just two sides of the same coin. The writing is well-informed, down-to-earth
and lucid.
