Mission, The - 1994 - Salad Daze (The Bbc Radio 1 Sessions) (192)

Quote:
Salad Daze (The BBC Radio One Sessions) is an apt title, given that this was released during the downslide in the Mission U.K.'s popularity. Compiling BBC Radio One sessions from 1986 to 1990, this is an indispensable document of the group's live power. While this collection may not be important to a casual fan, it is a nice companion piece to the Sum and Substance collection for true "Eskimos" (diehard Mission fans). — Chris True

The Mission (uk) - 1991 - Masque (vbr)
Quote:
While Children and Carved in Sand were bona fide, arena-rock powerhouses, Masque was a 180 degree turnaround. The end product of an aborted Wayne Hussey solo album, as well as the first Mission U.K. album not to feature original lead guitarist Simon Hinkler, Masque is a dancy, electronic step forward for the Mission. Unfortunately for the band, their fans weren't impressed, which is sad because Masque isn't really that off-putting. Critics, likewise, were harsh regarding the change — ironic, due to the fact that they had spent a lot of time and money giving the band a hard time for following a "formula." The production of Masque is near perfect and the songs are roughly similar to previous Mission releases, but the dominance of keyboards and (oddly) fiddles drove a lot of casual fans away. The opener, "Never Again'" is in the same vein as early tunes like "Wasteland" and "Deliverance," while "Like a Child Again" revisits the melodic pop of "Hands Across the Ocean." This is an album of varying styles and experiments that is worth another look. — Chris True
