AirPlan is a flight planning tool that is designed to assist pilots in the process of planning cross-country flights. It automates the process of determining leg distance, fuel consumption, airspeed, time enroute, headings, magnetic correction of heading, and wind correction of heading. It also provides a number of other tools and features for calculating weight and balance, obtaining weather information, maintaining an electronic logbook, generating a moving map, and additional support for handheld GPS units. Users of Microsoft Flight Simulator can also use AirPlan's moving map on the same PC by using a special interface module, or on a seperate PC using a Local Area Network or a null-modem cable.
A worldwide database of airports, navaids, waypoints, airspace boundaries, airways, and user waypoints is provided with the application. This database is updated every 56 days at the standard ICAO intervals. All of the data comes from the United States National Imagery and Mapping Agency with the exception of the airport data. U.S. airport data comes from the FAA’s ATA-100 database. Canadian airport data comes from the Canadian Flight Supplement published by Nav-Canada. U.S. and Canadian data is updated every 56 days. Worldwide data is primarily from NIMA, but data for airports not in the NIMA database comes from other sources. Razor’s Edge Software requests all users to submit reports to [email protected] anytime an error in the database is detected so that it can be reviewed and corrected as necessary.
Color coded worldwide terrain elevation data is also provided at a resolution of 1/2 minute by 1/2 minute blocks. This data comes from the United States National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration.
